Visual Songs
It all started for me when I scanned in my black and white etchings to colour them in PhotoShop. The handmade textures were vastly superior to any of the synthetic natural media filters or tools offered by any computer 'paint' software. What I did get from PhotoShop was the ability to layer multiple images and play with layer blending. I also knew that the type of work I wanted to produce would need to emerge from traditional sources.
Now I use PhotoShop as a compositional tool blending scanned photography, drawing, oil and pastel painting, printmaking, found objects and poetry to create my own unique style. This restrained use of PhotoShop, that creates work that allows the scanned material to add its own flavour, is what I term organic digital. I see the images as visual songs. The images and text working like music and vocals.
I now use my images both for personal projects and also on CD Packaging and other promotional materials for clients. They also regularly feature on the covers of ElectricGhost, our Free Monthly Music e-Journal. See ElectricGhost Prints for how we are planning to sell limited edition art prints.
